The History of Perfume

The history of perfume is still very mysterious. When did it begin? And for what purposes perfumes were used?

In Barcelona, as in some French cities, there is a perfume museum. There it is believed that the history of perfume began in the Stone Age, when it was discovered that resin provided with branches in the fire spread a pleasant fragrance. Soon our ancestors used this as a ritual to honor the gods.

For centuries, monks and priests use perfumes for religious purposes. They produced it themselves
with myrrh, labdanum, etc to assist  the elevation of the spirit.

The Greeks used 7 different ways to store to perfumes. One form was the storage in the
"lekythos".

Due to the many trips of the Greek traders to other countries soon the act to get perfumed was imitated ba other cultures. Perfumers and barbers came into fashion. Gradually other cities and countries created their fragrance, it is also said that Alexander the Great loved perfume ...

But how does perfumes work? After the application of the fragrance it reacts with the warmth of the body. A part evaporates and the remaining aromas remain longer on the skin. There are two types of structures in a perfume: the first is divided into phases, for example the top notes, heart notes and base notes. In addition, the monolithic phase in which the scent remains the same while you can smell it.

VismarEssence perfumes and their properties

Perfumes do not only smell good, but they also bring us memories and emotions back into memory. Psycho-aromatherapy studies these effects in the world of perfumery.

Impressive studies on aromatherapy describe these effects. However, we would like to describe the effect of specific scents, so you can better choose your perfume depending on the situation.

The oriental perfumes as e.g.  VismarEssence 564 for men and VismarEssence074 for women are suitable for romantic, dreamy, vibrant people. These scents promote the optimism and feeling of safety in humans.

Woody scents such as VismarEssence 528 for men and VismarEssence026 for women assist in facilitating the communication and socializing. They are particularly useful at the start of new relationships.

VismarEssence
501 for men VismarEssence117 for women are flowery perfumes and especially recommended for people full of vitality, as they awaken the positivism and joy in us.

Spicy scents are especially suitable if you want to seduce as they awaken erotic feelings in us. Appropriate perfumes are VismarEssence 510 for men and  VismarEssence 107 for women.

Fruity fragrances are for people with a great sense of humor (VismarEssence030 for women and for men VismarEssence 504).

The psychology of perfume

 Emotion and childhood associations

It is widely accepted that smell is one of the most evocative of the senses. For centuries, fragrance has been used to affect the emotions and reactions of people. There have been several scientific studies conducted to determine the effects of perfume on emotions and behavior.

There is a strong evidence of the positive or negative psychological effects that perfume can have on people. Fragrance can be linked to memories and associations. A sniff into a long forgotten scent can transport you for a minute, back to a special place or immerse you in old memories.

What is the psychology behind the perfume that we wear? Why do we pick such a perfume whether another one?

Nostalgia and attachment are mechanisms which are part of the psychological dimensions which can influence our attitude and preferences towards perfume. Indeed, some women have a strong “relationship” with their perfume; in this case the product becomes an extension of them-selves. Nostalgia, that is to say our preferences developed during an early “sensitive period” of life could explain choices observed in later life stages.

Of course, childhood experience and memories could explain also what perfume we like or not!

Tell me which perfume you wear, I’ll tell how old you are.

Another interesting fact is that we tend to associate specific fragrances to a particular personality, age or profession. Famous Chanel n°5 is often perceived right to someone who is getting on in years. That brings us to wondering if perfumes have an age? Are certain fragrances more appropriate for women of certain ages?
Some studies have shown that the probability of choosing a long-established perfume, rather than a recently introduced one, increases enormously with consumer age!

In conclusion, our “relationship” with perfume is something complex which is a combination of emotion, memories and sensation. Fragrance reflects also for women their personality and could be consider as a statue marker. Then, a simple choice means lots of things for women and marketers understood well the importance of these findings !
